Citizens Bank of Las Cruces, Genuine Hometown Banking

Our History

Since opening its doors in 1970, Citizens Bank of Las Cruces has been committed to a simple but meaningful principle: local banking decisions should be made by local people who understand the communities they serve. Founded in the heart of Las Cruces, Citizens Bank was established to provide responsive, relationship-focused financial services while helping support the economic growth of Southern New Mexico. Citizens Bank has remained locally owned and operated since its founding and has never been sold, a distinction that continues to set it apart in an increasingly consolidated banking industry.

The Bank's first location was housed in the historic Amador Hotel in downtown Las Cruces. During those early years, the founders adopted the "El Cortijo" symbol to represent a central marketplace serving surrounding communities. The symbol reflected the founders' vision that a community bank should serve as a vital gathering point for opportunity, investment, and growth. More than five decades later, that vision continues to guide the organization.

What began as a single-location bank has grown steadily through organic growth and strong customer relationships. Over the years, Citizens Bank expanded its footprint while staying true to its community banking roots. Today, the Bank serves customers through multiple full-service locations across Southern New Mexico and West Texas, providing personal and business banking services while maintaining the local decision-making authority that has defined the institution since day one.

Throughout its history, Citizens Bank has embraced innovation while preserving the personalized service that customers value. From introducing new banking technologies and electronic services to expanding digital banking capabilities for modern consumers, the Bank has consistently adapted to meet changing customer needs. Yet, even as technology has evolved, Citizens Bank has remained grounded in the relationship-banking approach that helped build its reputation. Customers continue to benefit from direct access to experienced bankers who understand local markets and are empowered to make decisions close to home.

Community involvement has also been a defining part of the Bank's story. Citizens Bank has long believed that its success is directly tied to the success of the communities it serves. Through volunteerism, charitable giving, educational initiatives, and support for local organizations, the Bank and its employees have invested in strengthening the region. From supporting schools and youth programs to contributing time and resources to nonprofit organizations and community development efforts, Citizens Bank has sought to be more than a financial institution. It has worked to be a trusted community partner.

The Bank's enduring success has been built on the dedication of its employees, the loyalty of its customers, and the guidance of local leadership committed to long-term stewardship. This foundation has allowed Citizens Bank to navigate periods of economic change while remaining focused on serving individuals, families, businesses, and future generations across the region. The Bank's local ownership structure and commitment to relationship banking continue to provide the flexibility and responsiveness that community members have relied on for more than fifty years.
Today, Citizens Bank remains proud of its heritage and optimistic about its future. While banking services and technology continue to evolve, the Bank's mission remains unchanged: to provide exceptional financial services, invest in the success of local communities, and build lasting relationships founded on trust, integrity, and personal service. As Citizens Bank continues its journey, it does so with the same commitment to community and local leadership that inspired its founders in 1970.
